The Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI) has strongly condemned the derogatory remarks made by some deputy ministers against India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi following his Lakshadweep visit. MATI emphasized India’s historical role as a key ally and first responder in Maldives’ crises, expressing immense gratitude for the enduring relationship.
In a statement, MATI highlighted India’s consistent support in various crises and its significant contribution to the Maldives’ tourism industry. The association stressed the need to preserve the close relationship between the two nations and refrained from actions or speech that could harm this bond.
The statement comes amid EaseMyTrip’s decision to suspend flight bookings to the Maldives, citing a diplomatic row. Meanwhile, MakeMyTrip reported a substantial surge in searches for Lakshadweep and announced plans for a new campaign promoting Indian beaches.
Prashant Pitti, co-founder of EaseMyTrip, expressed a desire for Lakshadweep to become an international destination, while the dispute poses a threat to the Maldives’ economy, primarily reliant on Indian visitors.
The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) called for a boycott of business dealings with the Maldives in solidarity against the derogatory comments. CAIT emphasized that such behavior targeting Modi is unacceptable to the business community.
In response to the remarks, Maldives ministers Malsha Shareef, Mariyam Shiuna, and Abdulla Mahzoom Majid were suspended, with the Maldivian foreign ministry clarifying that these personal views do not represent the government’s stance.
