The surge in COVID-19 cases across India is being attributed to the JN.1 COVID-19 variant, which has caused a 22 percent increase in cases in the country during the final week of 2023.
This variant, responsible for the spike, has introduced two additional symptoms. As per the UK’s Office for National Statistics, individuals infected with this strain have reported experiencing trouble sleeping and anxiety, supplementing the previously recognized symptoms like runny noses, coughs, headaches, and weakness.
The Winter Coronavirus Infection Study’s latest update highlighted an upsurge in SARS-CoV-2 prevalence in England and Scotland up to December 13, 2023.
The most common symptoms associated with JN.1 COVID-19 infections include runny nose (31.1%), cough (22.9%), headache (20.1%), fatigue (19.6%), muscle pain (15.8%), sore throat (13.2%), trouble sleeping (10.8%), and anxiety (10.5%), according to data.
The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has warned about the prevalence of the JN.1 strain in the UK, the US, Iceland, Portugal, and Spain. Experts note its rapid spread in France, China, and India as well.
