In Bihar, the political landscape is undergoing a seismic shift as signs of discord within the Grand Alliance, a six-party coalition government, have surfaced. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who severed ties with the NDA led by the BJP in August 2022, is dropping hints about a potential reunion with his former allies, raising concerns about the stability of the 17-month-old coalition government.
There are indications that Nitish Kumar is set to share the stage with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at an upcoming event in Sugauli, East Champaran district, on February 4. The move has fueled speculation about a potential realignment of political alliances.
The rift within the Grand Alliance became apparent when Rohini Acharya, daughter of RJD chief Lalu Prasad, made veiled comments critical of CM Nitish Kumar’s alleged ideological shifts. Though her remarks were later deleted, they hinted at dissatisfaction within the coalition.
Senior JD(U) leaders, including ministers Vijay Kumar Choudhary and Sanjay Jha, convened a meeting at the CM’s residence to address concerns and assure that all was well within the Mahagathbandhan, or Grand Alliance.
Meanwhile, in a bid to assess the situation, the BJP has called its Bihar cadre to Delhi for a meeting with Home Minister Amit Shah. While the PM’s visit on February 4 remains confirmed, speculations are rife about Nitish Kumar’s future political moves.
Political conjectures in Patna range from Nitish potentially breaking away from the Mahagathbandhan to aligning with the BJP once again. There is speculation about the possibility of a BJP legislator assuming the role of CM, or Nitish persisting as CM under the NDA banner.
Some sources also suggest that Nitish might advocate for the dissolution of the assembly, paving the way for simultaneous polls. BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi, traditionally considered a bridge between the BJP and Nitish, indicated that party workers may not be inclined towards an alliance with Nitish in 2024, maintaining a stance similar to 2017.
Nitish Kumar’s political journey has seen him oscillate between the NDA and other alliances since 2013, creating an air of uncertainty and political intrigue in Bihar. The recent cold vibes observed during a brief cabinet meeting further underscore the uncertainties surrounding the future of the coalition government in the state.
